IKEA plan to open a new superstore in Tarragona’s commercial centre, due to open in August 2018. The Swedish-based global retailer’s application for the construction of a new superstore was approved by Tarragona City Council on 2 January.
IKEA’s new superstore in Tarragona will be located next to the large roundabout forming the junction with the A7, and T11 at Les Gavarres, Tarragona. The site is immediately opposite Carrefour and adjacent to the new Mediterranean Olympic arena currently under construction.
IKEA received a commercial license from the Generalitat de Catalunya, last October. Which gave the company three years to start its activity in Tarragona. The new superstore will be the fourth IKEA store in Catalonia and the 18th in the country of Spain.
The IKEA superstore will occupy a site of some 66,000 square meters and will have 1,168 parking spaces. The building will have an area of 26,194 square meters, of which 19,001 will be commercial retail space. Making it the largest IKEA superstore in Spain, with a price tag of €45 million.
It’s a big win for Tarragona
This new IKEA superstore as been on the drawing board since 2010, when IKEA director, Sylvain Laval said that the company intends to be present its expansion plans for new stores in Catalonia, to the cities of Girona and Tarragona, but only one of them would be successful in the short term. Construction work is due to start in the next few months in Tarragona.
